  • Black Tourmaline was first named Schorl by a small village in Saxony, Germany after the villages original name. For some time Europeans believed Black Tourmaline and Schorl were different.
  • Ancient gem dealers struggled to determine the difference between gem stones. Some pink and red tourmaline gems were mistaken for rubies. It Is believed that some gemstones found In ancient royal crowns may actually be tourmaline.

History

Black Tourmaline has been used in rituals for protection dating back to at least the 15th century. It was first found in the 1400s in a small town in Saxony, Germany. For years the the Dutch East India company brought tourmaline to Europe from Sri Lanka until they realized It was the same as schorl
