The name amethyst is derived from the ancient Greek word amethustos which means sober. It Is believed that amethyst can prevent its wearer from excessive drinking instilling a sober and serious mind.
Story of Amethyst...
According to greek mythology, Amethyst was a beautiful young woman devoted to Goddess Diana. As she was traveling to the shrine of Diana she was pursed by Greek God Dionysus in his drunken state. Amethyst a virgin refused his affections. Dionysus became enraged and threatened Amethyst's life. Amethyst prayed and pleaded for help from the gods. Goddess Diana responded by turning her into a transparent clear stone (quartz). When Dionysus realized what he had done he became shameful and poured a goblet of wine over the stone as an offering of peace. The wine dyed the crystal purple.
*This is also the why behind Amethyst is said to ward off drunkenness, break negative habits and bring clarity to the mind.

Amethyst has be found and dated as early as 2000 BC. It has had many uses throughout history. Ancient civilizations held this gem in high regard more than many other gems. It was thought to control evil thoughts and bring forth the highest, purest aspirations of human kind.
